Residential Architectural Design
Nestled in a lush coastal landscape, we reinterpreted a partially completed plinth handed over by the client, working within the existing framework to minimise material waste, save time, and honour the efforts already invested. Inspired by traditional Kerala homes, we designed a central courtyard at the heart of the residence, serving as both a visual anchor and a passive cooling element around which the house is artfully composed, reinforcing its cultural connection while enhancing overall functionality. We introduced generous floor-to-ceiling openings to blur the boundaries with the outdoors, flooding interiors with natural light and promoting cross-ventilation to reduce reliance on artificial cooling. Locally sourced laterite stone, terracotta tiles, and sloped tiled roofs, a hallmark of Kerala architecture, were integrated to provide insulation, protect against monsoon rains, and support local craftsmanship while preserving the region’s aesthetic heritage. Through thoughtful spatial planning and material choices, we reinterpreted tradition in a contemporary context, creating a home that breathes with the land and lives lightly within it.
