Transformation & Preservation

We believe older buildings carry stories worth preserving. Our approach to transformation or preservation is about breathing new life into existing structures while honouring their past. Through thoughtful design and material choices, we weave together the old and the new with sensitivity and purpose.

Preserving the past while designing for what lies ahead is at the heart of our work. We recognise that renovation, conservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse each serve different needs and are not interchangeable. Whether it is making interventions, revitalising a space for a new use (renovation), safeguarding the original fabric and structure from further decay (conservation), faithfully returning it to its previous state (restoration), or adapting the building for contemporary needs (adaptive reuse), we tailor our approach to best serve the building and its context.

Additionally, historic preservation helps us protect cultural landmarks, while sustainable restoration integrates environmentally conscious methods into our projects. For us, it is about finding the right balance between rehabilitation, refurbishment, and preservational maintenance to ensure that each project lasts for generations to come.

We begin with an in-depth study of the existing structure – its material condition, history, and potential. A site visit and client questionnaire help us define your vision and priorities. From there, we identify opportunities for meaningful design responses while respecting the building’s heritage and propose sensitive interventions through mood boards and visual cues.
Throughout the process, we collaborate with skilled artisans and consultants, staying closely involved through every stage to ensure the design stays true to the building’s character while reflecting your personal story.

The process includes:

  • Research & analysis to understand the building’s significance and its context
  • Detailed condition assessment and graphical documentation to assess the building’s current state and identify areas requiring intervention or reinforcement
  • Mood boards & a cohesive design language reflecting materiality and the intended spatial character
  • 3D visualizations to illustrate how old and new elements will coexist

Once the 3D concept is finalised, we develop:

  • 2D drawings detailing transformation/preservation methods and execution strategies
  • Material research & sourcing to ensure authenticity, sustainability appropriate material choices
  • Permitting & legal considerations to ensure compliance with building regulations
